Virtualisation

Virtualisation is the next big thing in IT, and for very good reason, as it enables you to pool and share IT resources to better serve the business and save money.

As with many ‘buzz’ words, virtualisation means many different things to different people, but in its simplest form, it is getting your hardware to work better for you. Traditionally, as each new IT application has been purchased, a new physical server has been needed to run it; each requiring its own operating system and specialist set up. The result has been server rooms filled to the rafters with machines that are typically operating at only 50% of their capacity. With virtualisation, you can run multiple operating systems and versions on the same machine so you can improve its utilisation. This means fewer servers.

As well as saving you money in the short term in terms of your hardware purchasing, virtualisation has a number of ongoing benefits; lower energy costs, less maintenance, better security, higher availability, and simpler backup and recovery to name but a few.

Taken further, virtualisation can also be pushed out to the workstation environment with users operating off virtual desktops that are actually hosted on the server. This greatly reduces the need to constantly update all your laptops and desktops to keep pace with technology as well as cutting the maintenance overhead on your IT department in terms of making sure that everybody has the latest versions, patches and updates.

Wizard can help you to take advantage of this trend by identifying where virtualisation can result in savings for you, and in assisting you to implement the appropriate technology so that you get the most from it, both now and in the future.
